Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb, born in 1979, is a brilliant mathematician from Austria. She works on exciting topics like image processing and partial differential equations. Image processing is about how computers understand and change pictures. Partial differential equations are special math equations used to describe how things change over time or space.
She is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cambridge in England. She is also a Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge. Carola Schönlieb wrote a book called Partial Differential Equation Methods for Image Inpainting. This book explains how to use math to fill in missing parts of digital images.
Carola's Education Journey
Carola Schönlieb started her higher education at the University of Salzburg in Austria. She earned her master's degree in mathematics there in 2004.
Later, she moved to England to study at the University of Cambridge. She completed her Ph.D. (a very high-level degree) in 2009. Her Ph.D. project was about "Modern PDE Techniques for Image Inpainting." Her supervisor, Peter Markowich, guided her research.
After her Ph.D., she did more research at the University of Göttingen in Germany. In 2010, she returned to Cambridge. She became a lecturer, which is like a university teacher.
Amazing Achievements and Awards
Carola Schönlieb has received many important awards for her work in mathematics.
- In 2016, she won the Whitehead Prize from the London Mathematical Society. This award recognized her amazing contributions to the math behind image analysis.
- She also won a Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2017. This prize helps talented researchers continue their important work.
- In 2018, she was the Mary Cartwright Lecturer for the London Mathematical Society. This is a special honor where she gave a public lecture about her research.
- Since 2016, she has been a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute. This institute is a leading center for data science and artificial intelligence.
- Carola is the Director of the Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information. She is also a Co-Director of the Centre for Mathematical Imaging in Healthcare. Both of these centers are at the University of Cambridge.
- In 2021, she was chosen to be a Council Member-at-Large for SIAM. SIAM is a big group for mathematicians who work on real-world problems. Her term started in January 2022 and ended in December 2024.
- In 2022, she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Klagenfurt in Austria. This is a special award given to people who have made great achievements.
- She was also named a SIAM Fellow in 2024. This means she is recognized as a top expert in her field by SIAM.
Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb continues to inspire young mathematicians with her groundbreaking work in image processing and applied mathematics.
