Carola Macaulay (born Carola Young in 1682) was a successful businesswoman in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was a milliner, which means she made and sold hats and other accessories. What was special about Carola is that it was unusual for a woman to run her own business in Edinburgh during her time. She married Archibald Macaulay, and his ability to trade was actually helped by her existing business connections.

Carola's Early Life and Family
Carola Young was born in 1682 in a village called Kippen. This village is located between Balloch near Loch Lomond and the town of Stirling. She was one of three children. Her parents were Margaret (who was born MacFarlane) and Robert Young. Her father was a reverend minister in Kippen.
Starting a Business in Edinburgh
Carola and another woman named Helen Gilchrist decided to start a millinery business together. They called their company Carola Young & Co. They opened a shop in Edinburgh. To be allowed to trade in the city, they paid a fee to the Merchant Company of Edinburgh. This was a powerful group of business people. Carola also traded with Robert Blackwood, who was an important member of the company and a friend.

How Marriage Helped Archibald's Career
On July 19, 1710, Carola's husband, Archibald Macaulay, became an Edinburgh burgess and guildsman. This meant he was given special trading rights for "good services done." He was allowed to join the Merchant Company of Edinburgh. It was noted that his recent marriage to Carola Young was a big reason for his acceptance. Carola was already a member of the company when they married.
Carola's Continued Business Success
Carola and Archibald Macaulay had eight children together. They were Protestants and supported the Protestant Hanoverian family becoming the rulers of England. Carola continued to run her company even after marriage. For example, in 1713, she supplied a special bonnet and ruffles to a noblewoman named Lady Panmure.
Archibald Macaulay passed away in 1760. He had a large memorial in Greyfriars churchyard because he was a very important person, having been the Lord Provost of the city. Carola is not mentioned on his memorial, and we do not know the exact date of her death.
