Lady Caroline Emily Nevill (born May 31, 1829 – died February 23, 1887) was an important early English photographer. She was one of the first women to become well-known for her photography in England.

Early Life and Family

Caroline Emily Nevill was born in 1829. She was the oldest daughter of William Nevill, 4th Earl of Abergavenny, and his wife, Caroline Leeke. Her family lived in different parts of England. Her older brother, William, was born in Shropshire. Her younger sister, Henrietta Augusta, was born near Maidstone in Kent.

A Pioneer in Photography

Lady Caroline Emily Nevill became very interested in photography early on. She was introduced to this new art form by W.J. Thomas, who was an editor of a journal called Notes and Queries.

"The Trio"

Caroline and her two younger sisters, Henrietta and Isabel, were also photographers. They were known as "The Trio" because they often worked together. In 1854, they even showed their photographs at the London Photographic Society. This was a big deal for women at that time.

Photography Clubs

Lady Caroline was a very active member of early photography groups. She joined the Photographic Exchange Club when it started in 1855. From 1855 to 1858, she shared her photos of buildings and landscapes in Kent with the club. She also contributed her work to the Amateur Photographic Association starting in 1859. These clubs were important for photographers to share ideas and show their work.

A famous portrait of Lady Caroline was taken by Camille Silvy. This photograph is now kept at the National Portrait Gallery.

Later Life

Caroline Emily Nevill passed away in 1887 when she was 57 years old. Her work helped to show that photography was a serious art form, and she was a true pioneer for women in this field.
