Carona is a small, unincorporated community located in Cherokee County, Kansas, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. It's known for its interesting history, especially its connection to coal mining and railroads.
History of Carona
Carona was first known by a different name: Carbona. This name was chosen because the area had a lot of coal. Coal is a type of carbon-based fuel, which explains the original name.
A post office, where people could send and receive mail, first opened in Carona in 1905. It served the community for many years until it finally closed down in 1988.
Things to See in Carona
Carona is home to a special place called the Heart of the Heartlands museum complex. This museum works to save and share the history of how railroads were important to the mining industry in the area.
What You Can Find at the Museum
The museum complex has several cool parts:
- A railroad museum, full of information about trains.
- A restored Missouri Pacific Depot from Carona. A "depot" is like a train station building.
- Another restored Missouri Pacific Depot, this one from Boston, Missouri.
- A collection of real railroad locomotives (the engines that pull trains) and train cars.
One of the most exciting things to see is the KCS Steam Locomotive #1023. This old steam engine has been beautifully restored to look like new. It used to be on display in Pittsburg, Kansas, at Schlanger Park.
