Carpenter, Bernalillo County, New Mexico facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Carpenter was once a small, unincorporated community located in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. It was situated about 15 miles east of the larger city of Albuquerque. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or town council. Instead, it's usually governed by the county it's in.

What Was Carpenter Like?

Carpenter was a quiet place, known mostly for its post office. This post office was open for a short time, from 1903 to 1907. Back then, a post office was super important! It was how people sent and received letters, which was the main way to communicate with family and friends far away.

How Did Carpenter Get Its Name?

The community of Carpenter was named after its very first postmaster, a man named José R. Carpenter. He was in charge of the post office when it first opened.

Interestingly, the Carpenter name was already connected to the area before the community was officially named. In the 1880s, a man named Henry Carpenter owned a large ranch nearby in the Juan Tomás area. This shows that the Carpenter family had a history in that part of New Mexico.
