The Carrabasset Inn is a special old house located in North Solon, Maine. It was first built around 1850 as a family home. Later, after a big fire in the town, it became the only hotel in North Solon and stayed that way until the 1940s. Today, it's a private home again, but it still shows off a cool mix of old building styles like Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 because of its importance.

Exploring the Carrabasset Inn

The Carrabasset Inn is a tall, wooden house with two and a half stories. It has a roof that slopes down in the front, called a gable roof. A porch wraps around the east and south sides of the house, offering a nice outdoor space.

What Does It Look Like?

The front of the house, which faces Union Street, has a special window on the second floor. This window is called a Palladian window and features beautiful stained and colored glass. The main entrance is framed by decorative columns called pilasters and a fancy beam structure called an entablature. Above the Palladian window, a part of the house rises into the roofline. The corners of the building also have paired pilasters, and a wide decorative band runs just below the roof.

Inside the Historic Building

When the house was turned into a hotel, its inside was changed a lot. It now has a stylish design called Craftsman style. You can see this in the ceilings, which have decorative wooden beams. There is also more stained and colored glass inside, adding to its unique look.

A Look Back at Its History

We are not exactly sure when the Carrabasset Inn was first built. Based on its Greek Revival style, experts think it was around 1850. By 1875, it already looked much like it does today, according to old photographs. Back then, the main door faced east towards River Road, and the porch was only on that side.

From Home to Hotel

In 1913, a big fire destroyed many buildings in North Anson's business area, including all the hotels. N. W. Murphy, who owned the largest hotel, quickly changed this house into a new hotel. It became the only place for visitors to stay in the community. The Carrabasset Inn served as a hotel until the 1940s when it finally closed. After that, it was turned back into a private home. Part of the back wing was even moved to a different location.
