A Look Back: Park History
From Private Land to Public Park
Baltimore City bought Carroll Park in 1890. This makes it the third oldest park in the city. The park is named after the historic Carroll family. They used to own the land, including the Mount Clare Mansion.
After the Carroll family left in 1840, German immigrants used the land. They called it Schuetzen Park. When the city took over, famous landscape designers, the Olmsted Brothers, helped plan the park. They made it a beautiful place for everyone to visit.
A Step Towards Fairness: Golf Course Integration
The Carroll Park Golf Course has an important place in history. In 1951, it became one of the first golf courses to allow people of all races to play. This happened because of protests from local citizens. They believed everyone should have equal access to public places. This event was a big step towards fairness in the community.
