Cartwright is a small community with a long history. It is located in Wood County, Texas. Even though it's not a big city, it has its own unique story. Let's explore what makes Cartwright special.
A Look Back: History of Cartwright
People first started settling in the area now known as Cartwright way back in 1851. It was originally called "the Barrens." This name came from how isolated it was. There were also many wolves around, which made it a bit dangerous. The community was likely named after an early settler, Matthew Cartwright.
A post office opened in Cartwright in 1894. It helped people send and receive mail until 1907. During this time, the community also had a store and a Baptist church. Just two years later, Cartwright grew to have eight businesses. These included two carpenters, a barber, a gin (for processing cotton), and a mill.
In the 1930s, about 100 people lived in Cartwright. It had a seasonal industry, meaning some businesses were only open at certain times of the year. The population slowly went down over the years. By 1945, it was 75 people. It stayed around that number until the mid-1960s. From 1968 to 2000, the population was 61 people. In 1988, a map showed that Cartwright still had two businesses, a church, and a community center.

Cartwright is located in the north-central part of Wood County. You can find it along Farm to Market Road 1643. It is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) northeast of a town called Quitman. This makes it easy to visit nearby towns.
Learning in Cartwright: Schools and Education
Education has been important in Cartwright for a long time. The first school here was a log cabin built in 1874. Later, in 1882, the Cartwright family gave land for a new school building. Sadly, this school burned down in 1895.
A new two-classroom building quickly replaced it. The next year, 92 white students attended this school. By 1905, the school had 149 students. It also had three regular teachers and two music teachers. In the 1930s, Cartwright had two schools. Both of these schools closed sometime after 1960. Today, students in the Cartwright area attend schools in the Quitman Independent School District.
