About the Carver Memorial Library Building
The Carver Memorial Library is located in the heart of Searsport. It sits at the corner of Union and Mortland Streets. The building is made from fieldstone and has one story. It has a cool, old-fashioned design.
The Building's Unique Style
The library looks like something out of a storybook! It has a special design called "Tudor Revival." This means it looks like old English Tudor homes. You can see decorative half-timbering on the gables. These are the triangular parts of the roof.
The main entrance is in the middle of the building. It has a rounded archway. Big, decorative brackets hold up the roof above the door. Inside, the library still has many of its original features. You can see shiny marble floors and sturdy oak shelves. There are also black marble fireplaces in the reading areas. These add to the cozy, historic feel.
A Gift to the Town
The idea for a public library in Searsport started a long time ago. It began in 1871 with books donated by David Sears. By 1900, the library had over 2,000 books!
The current library building was a special gift. It was designed by the company McLean and Wright. It was built in 1910. Mrs. George Carver and her son Amos gave the building to the town. They wanted to honor Captain George Carver. He was a shipbuilder and ship's captain from Searsport. This gift helped create a wonderful place for everyone to read and learn.
