Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cascade was once a small town located in Putnam County, in the state of Ohio. Today, it's considered a "populated place" by the government, which means it was a place where people used to live, even if it's not a bustling town anymore.

History of Cascade

Cascade has an interesting history, even though it's no longer a busy town. It shows how some communities grow and thrive, while others fade away.

How Cascade Began

The town of Cascade was officially planned out in 1892. This process, called "platting," is when the layout of a town, including its streets and lots, is drawn on a map. Soon after, in 1893, a post office was opened in Cascade. This was an important service for the people living there, allowing them to send and receive mail. However, the post office only stayed open for a short time, closing its doors in 1904.

What Happened to Cascade?

For a while, a big gristmill was the main feature of Cascade. A gristmill is a factory where grain, like wheat or corn, is ground into flour. This mill was likely a very important part of the community, providing a service for local farmers and perhaps jobs for residents. But after the gristmill closed down, there wasn't much left to keep the community going. Without the mill, people likely moved away, and the town slowly disappeared. Today, there are few signs left that Cascade was once a busy place.
