The Penstemon serrulatus, also known as the Cascade penstemon or coast penstemon, is a beautiful wild flower. It belongs to a group of plants called penstemons. This plant grows naturally in the Pacific Northwest part of North America. You can find it from Oregon all the way up to Alaska.
What is the Cascade Penstemon?
The Cascade penstemon is a type of plant that comes back year after year. It has many soft, green stems that can grow quite tall. These stems can reach up to about 2.3 feet (70 cm) high. They grow from a strong, woody base that stays alive underground.
How Does it Look?
The leaves of the Cascade penstemon are shaped like a spear or an egg. They have sharp, saw-like edges, which is where the name "serrulatus" comes from. This word means "finely serrated."
The plant produces lovely clusters of flowers. These flowers are shaped like tubes and can be blue or purple. They add a splash of color to the places where they grow.
Where Does it Grow?
The Cascade penstemon is special because it can grow in lower areas. Unlike many other penstemons, it thrives along the Pacific Northwest coast. You can also find it in the lowlands around the Puget Sound. This makes it one of the few penstemons that live close to the sea.
