Discover the Cascadia Art Museum

The Cascadia Art Museum is a special place where you can explore art from the Pacific Northwest. It focuses on art created between 1880 and 1962. This includes pieces by artists who lived in the area or art that shows local places and events.

Where is the Museum Located?

You can find the museum at 190 Sunset Avenue in downtown Edmonds. It's super easy to get to, right next to the town's ferry terminal and train station.

The building itself is pretty cool! It used to be a Safeway grocery store built in the 1960s. Now, it shares space with other shops and restaurants. When it was updated for the museum, they even showed off the building's original wooden beams. This highlights the region's love for nature.

How the Museum Started

The idea for the Cascadia Art Museum came from Lindsey Echelbarger. He had been collecting art from Northwest artists for many years. He thought of the museum when his family bought the old Safeway building in 2012.

The museum officially opened on September 12, 2015. Its very first exhibit featured art from the Northwest Watercolor Society. In its first year, the museum held six main art shows. It also quickly grew its membership to over 600 people!

What Kind of Art Can You See?

The Cascadia Art Museum focuses on art from the Pacific Northwest from 1880 to 1962. Art historians say that much of the art from this time, especially before 1930, has been forgotten.

According to the museum's curator, David F. Martin, art from this region is unique. It has been influenced by both Native American and East Asian cultures. The museum has five different galleries. These galleries change their art displays every year or every three months. The museum shows over 200 artworks that it borrows from other collections.

You might see works from famous artists like:

  • The Northwest Watercolor Society
  • Peggy Strong
  • Lance Wood Hart
  • And artists from the Northwest School, such as John Matsudaira, Mark Tobey, and Morris Graves.

The exhibits are put together by David Martin, who is an expert from the Martin-Zambito Fine Art gallery in Seattle.
