The Cascadia Art Museum is a cool art museum located in Edmonds, Washington. It mainly shows off art from the Pacific Northwest area of the United States. This museum first opened its doors in 2015. It has a collection of more than 200 amazing artworks.

Where to Find the Museum

The museum is at 190 Sunset Avenue in downtown Edmonds. It's right next to the town's ferry terminal and train station. This makes it super easy to visit!

The building used to be a Safeway grocery store back in the 1960s. Now, it shares space with other shops and restaurants. The Echelbarger family bought the building in 2012. They wanted to fix it up for new businesses. During the renovation, they showed off the building's original wood frame. They also added new wood from the Pacific Northwest. This shows how much the region cares about nature.

How the Museum Started

The idea for an art museum focusing on Pacific Northwest art came from Lindsey Echelbarger. He thought of it when he bought the old Safeway building in 2012. Lindsey had been collecting art from Northwest artists for many years.

The museum officially opened on September 12, 2015. Its very first show featured art from the Northwest Watercolor Society. In its first year, the museum held six main art shows. It also grew its membership to over 600 people.

Art Collection and Shows

The Cascadia Art Museum mainly focuses on art from the Pacific Northwest. This art was created between 1880 and 1962. It includes works by artists from the area. It also features art about local places and events.

Art historians say that Pacific Northwest art from this time, especially before 1930, has often been forgotten. The museum's curator, David F. Martin, explains that art from this region is special. It's different from art in other parts of the U.S. This is because it was influenced by Native American and East Asian cultures.

The museum has five galleries. These galleries change their art displays every year or every three months. The museum has over 200 artworks. It also borrows and leases many pieces from other collections.

The Cascadia Art Museum has shown works by many talented artists. These include the Northwest Watercolor Society, Peggy Strong, and Lance Wood Hart. They have also featured art by Beulah Loomis Hyde. Plus, you can see works from famous Northwest School artists. These include John Matsudaira, Mark Tobey, and Morris Graves. David Martin, from the Martin-Zambito Fine Art gallery in Seattle, chooses all the art for the shows.
