"Casper", also known as 11 Rabbit, was an important ruler, or ajaw, of the ancient Maya city of Palenque. He ruled from August 9, 435, until 487. Casper followed K'uk' Bahlam I, who was the first king of Palenque's royal family.
Who Was King Casper?
Casper was born on August 8, 422. He became the king of Palenque when he was just 13 years old. This happened in August 435. He ruled the city for a very long time, a total of 52 years!
A Long and Important Reign
Casper's reign was one of the longest in Palenque's history. Only Pacal the Great, another famous Maya ruler, is known to have ruled Palenque for more years than Casper. His long rule likely brought stability and growth to the city.
Family and Successors
Casper was the son of King K'uk' Bahlam I. K'uk' Bahlam I was important because he started the ruling family of Palenque. After Casper, B'utz Aj Sak Chiik became the next king. It is thought that B'utz Aj Sak Chiik might have been Casper's son. Other possible children include Ahkal Moʼ Nahb I and Ahkal Kuk, who became kings of Palenque and Tortuguero, respectively.
