Meet Casper: The Bus-Riding Cat
This book tells the exciting story of Casper, a brave and friendly cat. Susan Finden adopted Casper from an animal rescue center in 2002. Casper was a very curious cat who loved to explore outside his home. He wasn't scared of people or busy streets.
Casper's Daily Adventures
Casper would often wander into office buildings or even doctor's offices. He would find a comfy chair and take a nap! But his most famous habit was riding the bus. He would wait with people at the bus stop right across from his house. Then, he would hop onto any bus that looked interesting to him.
How Casper Became a Commuter
Once on the bus, Casper would curl up on a seat and fall asleep. The bus would travel its full route, which was about 11 miles, all the way to the city center and back. When the bus returned to Casper's stop, the bus driver would let him off. Casper's unique bus-riding made him a local hero and then a worldwide celebrity!
A Sad Goodbye to a Special Cat
Susan Finden shares how she and Casper became famous because of his bus trips. Sadly, in January 2010, Casper passed away. He was hit by a speeding taxi while crossing the road near his home. Susan also writes about how she dealt with losing her beloved cat and the new wave of media attention that followed.
Behind the Book: Casper's Story
Susan Finden was born in 1954. She is a mom of three and works part-time in healthcare in Plymouth, England. After Casper's story and his passing became big news, a publishing company called Simon & Schuster wanted to turn his adventures into a book. They sent people from their London office to meet Susan and make a deal.
Writing Casper's True Story
A Scottish writer named Linda Watson-Brown helped Susan write the book. Linda loves animals too and helped make sure the book sounded just like Susan was telling the story herself. Casper the Commuting Cat was written for both kids and adults. It also includes many photos of Casper!
Giving Back to Animals
Before the book was released, Susan Finden said she planned to give all the money she earned from the book to animal rescue charities. She was surprised to see her name as an author, saying she wasn't very good at English in school!
