A Look Back: Church History
How the Church Started
The Cass Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church began in 1880. In 1883, the church leaders hired a design company called Mason & Rice. They wanted a church built at the corner of Cass and Selden. Later, in 1891, another company, Malcomson and Higginbotham, designed an addition. This new part was on the eastern side and is now the main part of the church.
Changes Over Time
When the church was new, many of its members were quite wealthy. But in the 1920s, things started to change. Many people moved away from the neighborhood. This caused the number of church members to go down. Even with these changes, the church decided to stay. They wanted to help and work with the new people moving into the area. Today, the church is still active. It is a United Methodist church that changes its services to help the community.
Building Design: Architecture
Unique Style and Materials
The church building has a special design called Richardsonian Romanesque. It is shaped like a Greek Cross. The church is made from rough, gray Grafton stone. It also has smooth, reddish Ionia sandstone for trim. At one corner, there is a tall, square tower. It stands 86 feet high. The green ceramic tile roof on the tower is the original one.
Inside the Church
Inside the church, you can see beautiful Tiffany glass windows. These windows let colorful light shine through. There is also a very old and large pipe organ. It is a Johnson - Tracker organ. Many people believe it is the biggest 19th-century pipe organ in all of Michigan. A special historical marker from the state of Michigan is placed at this church. It tells visitors about its importance.
