The Cass Community United Methodist Church is a historic church building in Detroit, Michigan. It is located at 3901 Cass Avenue in the Midtown area. The church was first built in 1883 and was known as the Cass Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church. It is recognized as an important historical place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and became a Michigan State Historic Site in 1985.

Church History

The Cass Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church started in 1880. In 1883, the church leaders hired a company called Mason & Rice to design their new building. This building was planned for the corner of Cass and Selden streets.

Later, in 1891, another architectural firm, Malcomson and Higginbotham, designed an addition. This new part was built on the eastern side of the church. Today, this addition is the main part of the church building.

When the church first opened, many of its members were wealthy. But in the 1920s, the neighborhood began to change. Many members moved away, and the number of people attending the church went down. Even with these changes, the church decided to stay in the area. They wanted to continue helping and working with the new people living nearby. The church is still active today as a United Methodist congregation. It continues to offer services that fit the needs of the local community.

Building Design

The church building has a special design called Richardsonian Romanesque. It is shaped like a Greek Cross. The church is made from rough, gray Grafton stone. It has smooth, light brown Ionia sandstone for decoration.

At one corner of the church, there is a tall, square tower. This tower stands 86 feet (about 26 meters) high. The roof of the tower is made of green ceramic tiles, which are the original ones from when the church was built.

Inside the church, the windows feature beautiful Tiffany glass. There is also a large pipe organ called a Johnson - Tracker organ. Many people believe this organ is the biggest 19th-century pipe organ in all of Michigan.

A special historical marker from the state of Michigan is placed at this church. It helps people learn about its important past.
