About His Art and Culture

Cassidy's traditional land was very large, covering thousands of square miles. This land held many special "dreaming sites." These sites are important places connected to ancient stories and beliefs.

His art was inspired by his country and its stories. His paintings often showed themes like caterpillars and possums. They also shared important "dreamings," which are traditional stories and beliefs passed down through generations. These dreamings helped preserve his culture.

His Brother, Clifford Possum

Cassidy's brother was Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri. Clifford was one of the most famous "first generation" contemporary Indigenous Australian artists. "First generation" means he was among the first Aboriginal artists to paint using modern art materials. Clifford passed away in 2002.

After Clifford died, Cassidy began painting a special "circle" dreaming. This was a powerful story used in sand paintings. It was a way to honor Clifford and connect with him spiritually. He also painted the "Possum Dreaming," which was a story he received from Clifford. These later paintings looked very different from his earlier works. They had new designs, layouts, and colors. Cassidy's art was very important for keeping his culture and powerful stories alive.
