Who Built This Castle?

A very old document from 1271 mentions a castle at Rhyd-y-Briw, which is thought to be Castell Du. This suggests the castle was being built around that time.

A Castle with a Short Life

Castell Du didn't last very long as an active fortress. After it was built, there are no more mentions of it in old papers from the 1200s. This suggests its life was quite short. It's likely that the castle was captured by the army of Edward I of England during a war between 1276 and 1277. After being taken, it seems the castle was simply left empty and abandoned.
