Castillo de San Buenaventura

The Castillo de San Buenaventura is a cool old defense tower. You can find it in Caleta de Fuste, a small town on the island of Fuerteventura. This island is part of the Canary Islands in Spain. People also call it "Castillo de Caleta de Fuste". This tower was recognized as an important historic building way back in 1949.

History of the Castle

Imagine a time when pirates sailed the seas! In the 1700s, pirates from France, England, and North Africa (called Barbary pirates) were a big problem. They would attack coastal towns. To protect the area, the general in charge of the islands, Andrés Bonito y Pignatelli, ordered a special tower to be built.

He asked a smart military engineer named Claudio de L'Isle to design it. This general, Bonito y Pignatelli, also had another tower built called Torre de Tostón. Sadly, he passed away in 1743, but his towers helped keep the islands safe.

What the Castle Looks Like

Castillo de San Buenaventura

The Castillo de San Buenaventura was built to be strong. It had two big iron cannons ready to defend the coast. Inside, there was a strong central pillar that held up the roof. People called watchmen worked there, always looking out for danger.

On the castle's roof, there was a small, round tower called a bartizan. This was a perfect spot for guards to watch the sea. The castle also had a cistern, which is like a big tank to store fresh water.

Today, the castle is near the marina in Caleta de Fuste. Visitors can walk up to the tower using a stone staircase. This staircase even has a drawbridge with iron chains, just like in old stories! The Castillo de San Buenaventura is one of the most famous buildings in the town.
