The Castle of San Marcos (also known as Castillo de Alfonso X El Sabio) is an old castle in El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz, Spain. This amazing castle was built a long time ago, in the Middle Ages.

King Alfonso X of Castile had it built as a special kind of church that was also a strong fort. It was even built on the spot where an old mosque used to be. You can still see a part of the mosque's wall today.

Near the castle, there's a copy of an old map made by Juan de la Cosa. There's also a sign that tells you more about it, and a small fountain.

Protecting the Castle

The Castle of San Marcos is very important. Because of this, it was officially named a national monument on August 30, 1920. This means it is a protected historical site.

Today, it is listed in Spain's heritage records as a Bien de Interés Cultural. This title means it is a cultural property of special interest. It helps make sure the castle is kept safe for future generations to enjoy.
