Castorama is a large French company that helps people with their homes and gardens. It sells tools and supplies for "do-it-yourself" (DIY) projects and home improvements. Castorama is based in Templemars, France. It is part of a bigger British company called Kingfisher plc.

What is Castorama?

Castorama is a popular store where you can find almost anything for fixing up your home or starting a garden. They sell many different products, from paint and tools to plants and furniture. The company has many stores, with 101 in France and 90 in Poland. Castorama became part of the Kingfisher plc group in May 2002. Another store chain, Brico Dépôt, also joined Kingfisher at the same time.

How Castorama Started

Castorama was founded in 1969 by a person named Christian Dubois. He opened the very first large DIY store in France. This first store was in Englos, near the city of Lille. It was a huge store, about 5,000 square meters!

The company grew very quickly. Just a few years later, in 1972 and 1973, two more stores opened. By 1975, Castorama had stores outside its home region, like in Plaisir. Only 20 years after starting, Castorama had grown to 80 stores across France.

In 1977, Castorama launched a very famous slogan in France: "Chez Casto, y a tout ce qu'il faut!" This means "At Casto, there's everything you need!" It was a catchy phrase that many people remembered.

Growing and Changing

Over the years, some Castorama stores have changed. Some were turned into "DIY warehouses" under the Brico Dépôt name. These stores are similar to the "B&Q Warehouse" stores you might find in the United Kingdom.

In February 2009, Kingfisher sold 31 Castorama stores that were in Italy. These stores were bought by another French retailer called Leroy Merlin.
