The Castril Palace: A Historic Building

Where is the Palace Located?

The Castril Palace is found in a historic part of Granada called the Race of the Darro. This area was once an old Arab neighborhood known as Ajsaris. In the 1500s, many important families from Granada lived here. The palace is considered one of the best examples of Renaissance style buildings in the city.

Who Built the Palace?

The palace belonged to the family of Hernando de Zafra. He was a very important person who worked as a secretary for the Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II. Hernando de Zafra played a big part in helping the monarchs take back Granada from Muslim rule during a time called the Reconquista.

The front of the palace shows the year it was finished: 1539. Many people believe that Sebastián de Alcántara designed this building. He was a talented student of a famous architect named Diego de Siloé.

What is it Used for Today?

In 1917, a scholar named Leopoldo Eguílaz y Yanguas bought the Castril Palace. He was an expert in Arab and Middle Eastern studies. His goal was to make the palace the permanent home for the Archaeological Museum of Granada. Since then, the palace has been a place where people can explore ancient artifacts and learn about the past.
