Catalpa, Nebraska facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Catalpa is a small place in Holt County, Nebraska, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes or buildings that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town would. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county's rules and services.

The Story of Catalpa

How Catalpa Got Started

Catalpa became a recognized place in the 1880s. This was when a post office was opened there. A post office was very important back then because it helped people send and receive letters and packages. It also showed that enough people lived in the area to need their own mail service.

Why the Name "Catalpa"?

The community of Catalpa got its name from a special type of tree. There was a grove, or a small forest, of Catalpa trees growing near where the community was forming. These trees are known for their large, heart-shaped leaves and beautiful, bell-shaped flowers that often bloom in late spring or early summer. It was a natural and pretty way to name the new settlement.
