Catharina Lysholm (1744 – 9 December 1815) was a very successful Norwegian businesswoman and ship-owner. She was known for her important role in the business world of Trondheim.

Early Life and Family

Catharina Meincke Lysholm was born in Trondheim, Norway, in 1744. Her father, Hilmar Meincke, was a merchant and held public office. Her mother was Catharina Mølmann.

In 1763, Catharina married Broder Brodersen Lysholm. He was one of the most successful merchants in Trondheim at that time. Both her father and her husband originally came from Flensburg in Southern Schleswig.

Becoming a Business Leader

Catharina became very wealthy through both her family and her marriage. Her father owned parts of copper factories and ran a company that traded with the West Indies. He also owned a tobacco factory. When he passed away, Catharina inherited most of his money and businesses.

In 1772, her husband died. Catharina then took over his business interests. She partnered with Hans Carl Knudtzon, who had moved to Trondheim from Bredstedt.

Running a Shipping Company

From 1772 to 1779, Catharina managed what was probably the largest shipping company in Trondheim. It was called Fru Agentinde Lysholm & Co. This means "Mrs. Agent Lysholm & Co."

By 1779, she also helped start and own the city's shipyard. A shipyard is a place where ships are built and repaired. After this, she left the shipping company, and Hans Carl Knudtzon became the only owner.

Impact and Legacy

Catharina Lysholm was a very important person in Trondheim's business community. People respected her so much that they would salute her when she returned to the city after business trips.

She also cared about helping others. She was involved in charity work and built several important buildings. One of these was the Havstein manor in 1772. This manor became a popular meeting place for the city's upper class.

In 1986, a street in the Byåsen district of Trondheim was named after her. It is located in the area of Ferstad. This shows how much she is still remembered and honored today.
