Cathedral Choral Society facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Cathedral Choral Society is a large group of about 200 people who love to sing together. They are a volunteer chorus, which means they sing because they enjoy it and want to share music. Their main home is the beautiful Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

This special singing group was started in 1941 by a person named Paul Callaway. Later, J. Reilly Lewis became their music director and led the group for many years, from 1985 to 2016.

The Cathedral Choral Society performs most often at the Washington National Cathedral. But they also sing at other famous places. These include the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap. They share their amazing music with many people at these different venues.

Helping Music Grow

In 2006, the Cathedral Choral Society created a special fund. This fund is called an endowment. It was set up to remember Richard Wayne Dirksen. He worked at the Cathedral for 50 years and helped the Society in many ways.

What the Fund Does

The money in this fund helps music in two main ways:

  • It helps pay for new Christmas songs, called carols, to be written. This means new music is created for everyone to enjoy.
  • It also helps support their yearly concerts called Joy of Christmas. These concerts are a popular tradition during the holiday season.
