The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit is a very important church in Palmerston North, New Zealand. It is the main church for the Catholic community in the area. The church first opened in 1925 and was known as St Patrick's Church. Later, in 1980, it became a cathedral and was renamed the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit.

What Does the Cathedral Look Like?

The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit is built in a style called Gothic Revival. This means it looks like older Gothic churches, but it was built more recently. It is made from strong reinforced concrete.

Special Design Features

The church has many beautiful details. You can see pointed arches, tall narrow windows called lancet windows, and decorative spires called pinnacles. These are all common features of Gothic style buildings.

The main area of the church, called the nave.

Inside the cathedral, there's a long central area called the nave. On each side of the nave, there are seven strong columns. These columns hold up the pointed arches above.

Amazing Stained Glass Windows

Along the two side aisles of the church, there are 10 beautiful stained glass windows. These windows show stories from the 10 parables of Jesus. They were designed by an artist named Franz Xaver Zettler from Munich.

Māori Carvings

The cathedral also has 25 special carvings made by Māori artists. These carvings represent the six main Māori groups, called iwi, from the area. They add a unique New Zealand touch to the church.

Who Leads the Cathedral?

The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit has a priest who leads the church community. The current acting Parish Priest is Fr Joe Grayland.
