Catherine was born in London, England. Her mother was from Galway, Ireland. Catherine grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She has lived in many places, including Oxford, Scotland, Derry, and County Donegal in Ireland.
When she was around 20, she got married and became Catherine Byron. She also has daughters.
Her Education and Writing
Catherine went to Somerville College at Oxford University. She studied Classics, which is about ancient Greek and Roman history and literature. She loved writing poetry for most of her life. But after she got married, she stopped writing for about ten years.
Later, she started writing poetry again. Since then, she has published six books of her poems. Besides writing her own poetry, Catherine has also studied the famous poet Seamus Heaney. She wrote a book about his work.
Working with Artists
Catherine Byron often works with other artists. She frequently collaborates with Denis Brown, who is an artist and calligrapher. A calligrapher is someone who creates beautiful handwriting. She also works with Eileen Coxon, a painter and printmaker.
Catherine has been an artist in residence at the Hayward Gallery. This means she was invited to work there for a period. She also worked at the department of Glass & Ceramics at the University of Sunderland. She has taught writing and Medieval Literature at Nottingham Trent University.
