Catherine Elizabeth McDonnell Graham, Duchess of Montrose (born Young; 5 September 1935 – 29 October 2014) was an important woman known for her kindness and charity work. She was married to James Graham, who was the 8th Duke of Montrose.

Catherine's Early Life

Catherine Elizabeth McDonnell Young was born in Winnipeg, Canada, on September 5, 1935. Her parents were Norman Andrew Thomson Young and Mary Moody. Her father was the first headmaster of a well-known school called Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg. He was also an officer in the Canadian army and sadly died in France in 1942 during his service.

Catherine went to Balmoral Hall School in Winnipeg. Later, she continued her studies at the University of Manitoba and Queen's University at Kingston.

Her Family Life

On January 31, 1970, Catherine married James Graham. At that time, he was known as the Marquess of Graham. When her husband inherited his father's titles in 1992, Catherine became the Duchess of Montrose.

Catherine and James had three children together:

  • Lady Hermione Elizabeth Graham (born 1971)
  • James Alexander Norman Graham, Marquess of Graham (born 1973)
  • Lord Ronald John Christopher Graham (born 1975)

After they married, Catherine and James moved to Scotland. They lived at Auchmar House near Loch Lomond. The Duchess passed away at the age of 79 in Larbert, Scotland.

Helping Others: Philanthropy

Catherine was a strong supporter of many charities. She became a leading helper for the Preshal Trust, a charity located in Govan, Scotland. In her later years, she helped countless good causes. These included the Red Cross and a Christmas carol concert for Cancer Research UK at Glasgow Cathedral. She also supported Scotland's Gardens scheme, which opens private gardens to the public. She was also involved with the annual Women of Scotland Lunch, which celebrates the achievements of Scottish women.
