The Duke of Montrose is a special title in Scotland. It's named after the town of Montrose, Angus. This title has been created twice in history. It belongs to the Peerage of Scotland, which is a system of noble ranks.

The title was given again in 1707 to James Graham, 4th Marquess of Montrose. He was the great-grandson of the famous James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose. James Graham received this high honor because he strongly supported the Act of Union. This act joined Scotland and England to form Great Britain. Since then, the title has stayed with the Graham family. They are also the leaders, or "chieftains," of Clan Graham.

The Duke of Montrose has several other important titles. These include Marquess of Montrose (from 1644) and Earl of Montrose (from 1503). Some titles, like Earl Graham and Baron Graham, are part of the Peerage of Great Britain. Most of the other titles are from the Peerage of Scotland. The oldest son of the Duke uses the special "courtesy title" of Marquess of Graham and Buchanan.

The family's main home today is Auchmar House. It is located near Loch Lomond in Stirlingshire. Before that, their home was Buchanan Castle, also in Stirlingshire.

First Dukes of Montrose (1488)

The first time the title of Duke of Montrose was created was in 1488. This was for David Lindsay, 1st Duke of Montrose. He was a loyal supporter of King James III.

However, when King James IV became king in 1488, David Lindsay's dukedom was taken away. It was given back to him for his lifetime in 1489.

Earls of Montrose (1503)

The title of Earl of Montrose was created in 1503. The first person to hold this title was William Graham, 1st Earl of Montrose. His family had already held the title of Lord Graham since 1445.

A very important Earl of Montrose was James Graham, 5th Earl of Montrose. He later became the 1st Marquess of Montrose in 1644.

Marquesses of Montrose (1644)

The title of Marquess of Montrose was created in 1644. The first Marquess was James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose. He was a famous military leader in Scottish history.

His grandson, James Graham, 4th Marquess of Montrose, later became the first Duke of Montrose in the second creation of the title.

Dukes of Montrose, Second Creation (1707)
