John Graham, 4th Earl of Montrose facts for kids
John Graham, 4th Earl of Montrose (1573–1626) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the title of Earl of Montrose from 1608 until the 1620s. For a time, he was also the Lord President of the Privy Council of Scotland, which was a group of advisors to the King.
He was a Catholic, as noted by the English ambassador William Asheby in 1589. This was mentioned after the death of his uncle, Mungo Graham, who worked for King James VI.
In 1595, John Graham was involved in a serious conflict in Edinburgh. This happened after a relative of his, John Graham of Hallyards, died. John Graham fought with James Sandilands on the Royal Mile, a famous street in Edinburgh. During this event, many shots were fired, and Sandilands was injured. A rumor even spread that King James was trapped inside Holyrood Palace because of the confusion.
In 1614, he visited the royal court in Royston, England. There, a doctor named Théodore de Mayerne helped him with his feelings of deep sadness.

John Graham married Margaret Ruthven. She was the daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie and Dorothea Stewart. They had several children, including:
