The Duke of Montrose is a special title in Scotland. It's named after the town of Montrose, Angus. This title has been created twice in history. It belongs to the Peerage of Scotland, which is a system of noble ranks.
The title was given again in 1707 to James Graham, 4th Marquess of Montrose. He was the great-grandson of the famous James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose. James Graham received this high honor because he strongly supported the Act of Union. This act joined Scotland and England to form Great Britain. Since then, the title has stayed with the Graham family. They are also the leaders, or "chieftains," of Clan Graham.
The Duke of Montrose has several other important titles. These include Marquess of Montrose (from 1644) and Earl of Montrose (from 1503). Some titles, like Earl Graham and Baron Graham, are part of the Peerage of Great Britain. Most of the other titles are from the Peerage of Scotland. The oldest son of the Duke uses the special "courtesy title" of Marquess of Graham and Buchanan.
The family's main home today is Auchmar House. It is located near Loch Lomond in Stirlingshire. Before that, their home was Buchanan Castle, also in Stirlingshire.
