Catherine Isabella Osborne (born June 30, 1818 – died June 21, 1880) was a talented Irish artist and writer. She was also a generous supporter of other artists. She lived in a beautiful house called Newtown Anner House in Ireland.

About Catherine Isabella Osborne

Catherine Isabella Osborne was born on June 30, 1818. Her birthplace was Newtown Anner House, near Clonmel in County Tipperary, Ireland. She was the only daughter of Sir Thomas Osborne and Catherine Rebecca Osborne.

Her Family Background

Her father, Sir Thomas Osborne, was an important landowner. He owned land in County Tipperary and County Waterford. He also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Carysfort. This meant he helped make laws for the country. Catherine's mother, Catherine Rebecca, was a very religious woman from England.

Catherine had an older brother named William. Sadly, William passed away when he was only eight years old. This meant Catherine became the only child left to inherit her family's estate.

Catherine's Talents and Interests

Catherine Isabella Osborne was known for having a lively home. She often welcomed famous artists to stay with her. These artists included Thomas Shotter Boys and Alexandre Calame. Boys even painted a picture at Newtown Anner House.

Catherine was an early supporter, or patron, of Calame. She may have hired him to teach her daughters how to paint. She was also very interested in photography. A photographer named William Despard Hemphill even dedicated his photos of Clonmel to her. This was because she had supported his work.

Catherine herself was a skilled artist. She created many sketchbooks filled with drawings of country houses. These sketchbooks are now kept at her daughter's home in Myrtle Grove, Youghal. She also edited and published two books of her mother's letters. These books were called Memorials of the life and character of Lady Osborne. Catherine also helped pay for a library in Knockmahon, County Waterford.

She passed away at Newtown Anner House on June 21, 1880. She is buried in the family tomb at Killaloan church.

Catherine's Family Life

Catherine Osborne met Ralph Bernal in London in 1844. They met at the home of Sydney, Lady Morgan. Before they got married, Ralph took Catherine's family name, Osborne. So, his name became Ralph Bernal Osborne. They were married on August 20, 1844.

Her Daughters

Catherine and Ralph had two daughters, Edith and Grace. Catherine stayed at Newtown Anner House to raise her girls. Edith later married Henry Arthur Blake. Grace became the second wife of William Beauclerk, 10th Duke of St Albans.
