Catherine of Clermont facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Catherine of Clermont (French: Catherine de Clermont) was an important lady who lived a long time ago, around the 12th and 13th centuries. She was a powerful ruler in her own right, known as the Countess of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis from 1191 to 1213. She also became the Countess of Blois through her marriage.

Catherine's Life and Role

Her Family and How She Became a Countess

Catherine was the oldest child of Raoul I, Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis. Her mother was Countess Alix. In those times, titles and lands were often passed down through families. Catherine had a brother named Philippe. However, Philippe died before their father, Raoul. This meant that when her father passed away, Catherine became the Countess of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis. This was a significant role, as she was in charge of her own lands and people.

Marriage and Children

Catherine married Louis I, Count of Blois. Louis was a very important person himself, as he was the grandson of the King of France. Together, Catherine and Louis had three children. One of their children was Theobald VI, Count of Blois, who would later become a count himself. Catherine passed away in 1212 or 1213.
