Exploring Caucomgomoc Lake

Caucomgomoc Lake is a large body of water in northern Maine. It is known for its natural beauty and quiet surroundings. The lake is about 5.6 miles (9.0 km) long and 1.6 miles (2.6 km) wide. It covers an area of about 4,594 acres. The deepest part of the lake is about 79 feet (24 m) deep.

Where is Caucomgomoc Lake?

The lake sits in a special area of Maine called the North Maine Woods. This is a vast, mostly undeveloped forest region. It is located where four different land sections meet. These sections are known as townships 6 and 7, and ranges 14 and 15.

How Water Flows In and Out

Caucomgomoc Lake gets its water from several streams and smaller ponds.

  • Inflows:
    • Loon Stream flows into the southern end of the lake. It brings water from several smaller lakes and ponds. These include Loon Lake, Bear Pond, and Big Hurd Pond.
    • Water also comes from Little Shallow Lake. This water travels through Shallow Lake, Daggett Pond, and Round Pond. It then enters the east side of Caucomgomoc Lake through Ciss Stream.
    • Smaller streams like Avery Brook, Middle Brook, and Ramsell Brook feed the northern part of the lake.
  • Outflows:
    • There is a dam on the eastern shore of the lake. This dam controls how much water leaves the lake.
    • Water flows out of the dam into Caucomgomoc Stream.
    • This stream then flows through Black Pond and into Chesuncook Lake.
    • Finally, the water reaches the West Branch Penobscot River at Ripogenus Gorge.

Fish and Wildlife

Caucomgomoc Lake is home to various types of fish. In the past, the lake was well-known for its trout. However, over time, other fish species have become more common. Today, you will mostly find white perch and yellow perch in the lake. These fish have largely taken the place of the trout that used to live there.
