Caylor is a small place in Lee County, Virginia, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

Caylor had a post office for a short time, from 1896 to 1904.

How Did Caylor Get Its Name?

The name "Caylor" has an interesting story! The area was supposed to be named after T. A. Taylor. He was one of the first people to own the land where the community started.

However, when the name was written down, there was a mistake. Instead of "Taylor," it was accidentally written as "Caylor." And that's the name that stuck!

The Story of Elydale Mansion

There's a large, beautiful house in the nearby Wilderness Road State Park. It has 12 rooms and a rich history.

What Was the Mansion Called?

The mansion was meant to be called "Karlan." This name was chosen to honor its previous owners, Karl and Ann Harris.

But many local people still call the mansion "Elydale." This name honors Robert McPherson Ely. He was the one who built the house in 1878 and gave it the name "Elydale."

The Elydale Mansion's Early History

Just two years after building his grand home, Robert Ely went swimming. Sadly, he became very sick and passed away in 1880.

His wife later remarried in 1885 to Thomas A. Taylor. When a railroad stop was built nearby, a mapping mistake happened. This error led to the area being called "Caylor, Virginia." This is the same T. A. Taylor whom the community was originally meant to be named after.
