Cayo Lara Moya (born in 1952) is a Spanish politician. He was the leader of a political group called United Left (IU) from December 2008 to July 2016. He is also a part of the leadership of the Communist Party of Spain.
Early Life and Local Leadership
Cayo Lara was born in a town called Argamasilla de Alba in the Ciudad Real Province of Spain. His father was a truck driver. Cayo Lara spent most of his life in his hometown. When he was 13, he stopped going to school to help his family. He worked several jobs. After he finished his military service, he started his own farm.
By the late 1970s, Cayo Lara became an important leader for farmers' groups in his area. He also joined the Communist Party of Spain. When democracy returned to Spain, he was chosen to be part of the executive committee for the Coordination of Farmers Organisations (COAG).
In 1987, Cayo Lara was elected as the Mayor of Argamasilla de Alba. He served as mayor for 12 years, until 1999. In 2000, he became the General Coordinator of United Left in the region of Castile-La Mancha. He ran for president of that region in the 2007 elections but did not win a seat in the regional parliament.
Leading a National Political Group
After the 2008 Spanish general election, the United Left group did not do very well. Their previous leader, Gaspar Llamazares, resigned. United Left, along with its allies, lost many of their seats in those elections.
Because of this, different groups within United Left wanted to choose a new leader. Cayo Lara was chosen by the Communist Party of Spain to be their candidate for the leadership election. He was seen as a moderate communist.
In November 2008, the United Left held a big meeting to choose their new leader. Five different groups presented their candidates. Cayo Lara's group received the most votes, with 43%. However, no candidate won more than half of the votes.
On December 14, 2008, the Federal Political Council of United Left met again. This time, Cayo Lara received 65% of the support. He was then officially chosen as the General Coordinator of United Left. As leader, Cayo Lara often spoke out against the Spanish Government's actions to deal with economic problems. He served in this role until July 2016.
