Cayo Lara Moya (born in 1952) is a Spanish politician. He was the main leader of a political group called United Left (IU). He led this group from December 2008 to July 2016. He is also an important member of the Communist Party of Spain.
Cayo Lara's Early Life and Local Work
Cayo Lara was born in a town called Argamasilla de Alba in Ciudad Real Province, Spain. His father was a truck driver. Cayo Lara has lived most of his life in his hometown.
When he was 13, he stopped going to school. He started working to help his family. He had different jobs before joining the military. After his military service, he started his own farm.
In the late 1970s, he became a key leader in farmers' groups in his area. He also joined the Communist Party of Spain. When Spain became a democracy again, he was chosen for a leadership role in a farmers' organization called COAG.
In 1987, Cayo Lara was elected as the Mayor of Argamasilla de Alba. He served as mayor for 12 years, until 1999.
In 2000, he became the leader of United Left (IU) in the region of Castile-La Mancha. He ran to become the president of that region in 2007. However, he did not win a seat in the regional parliament.
During this time, he was known for standing up against corruption. He supported a fellow party member, Manuel Fuentes, who was the mayor of Seseña. This mayor was dealing with issues related to a builder and claims of corruption.
Cayo Lara's National Leadership Role
After the 2008 Spanish general election, United Left (IU) did not do very well. Their previous leader, Gaspar Llamazares, stepped down. The party had lost many of its seats in the election.
Because of this, different groups within IU started to form. They wanted to choose a new leader. Cayo Lara was seen as a moderate member of the Communist Party of Spain. In October 2008, his group chose him to be their candidate for the top leadership position.
The party held a big meeting in November 2008 to pick a new leader. Five different groups put forward their own candidates. Cayo Lara's group received the most votes, about 43%.
Since no candidate won a clear majority, they had another meeting in December 2008. At this meeting, Cayo Lara received 65% of the support. This meant he was officially chosen as the General Coordinator, or main leader, of United Left.
As leader, Cayo Lara often spoke out against the Spanish government's plans. He disagreed with how they were handling the country's economic problems.
