The Parry ceanothus (scientific name: Ceanothus parryi) is a type of shrub. It belongs to the buckthorn family, called Rhamnaceae. You can find this plant growing naturally in Oregon and northern California. It likes to live in the canyons of mountains near the coast.

What is Parry Ceanothus Like?

The Parry ceanothus is a tall, upright shrub. It can grow up to 5 meters (about 16 feet) high.

Stems and Leaves

When the woody parts of the plant are new, they are reddish-brown and feel a bit fuzzy, like wool. As they get older, they turn darker. Most of the fuzzy hairs fall off over time.

The leaves of the Parry ceanothus stay green all year round. This means they are evergreen. The leaves grow in an alternating pattern along the stem. They are oval-shaped and have small, tooth-like edges. These edges also have tiny glands. The top side of the leaves is dark green and smooth. The underside is a lighter color and feels fuzzy.

Flowers and Fruit

The flowers of this shrub grow in long clusters. These clusters can be up to 15 centimeters (about 6 inches) long. The flowers themselves are a beautiful deep blue color.

After the flowers bloom, the plant produces fruit. The fruit is a small, smooth capsule. It has three distinct parts, or lobes. Each capsule is only a few millimeters long.
