Cecil Bødker (born March 27, 1927 – died April 19, 2020) was a famous Danish writer and poet. She is best known for her exciting young adult fiction books about a character named "Silas".
In 1976, Cecil Bødker received the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal for Writing. This award is a very high honor for writers who make a lasting contribution to children's literature.
About Cecil Bødker
Cecil Bødker was born in Fredericia, Denmark, in 1927.
She started her writing journey in 1955. Her first poems were published under the name Cecil Skar. In 1961, she released her first collection of short stories called Øjet (which means The Eye). These stories often explored how people felt disconnected from nature. She continued to write about these ideas in later works like Tilstanden Harley (The condition Harley) (1965) and Pap (Cardboard) (1967).
Awards and Recognition
Cecil Bødker won many important awards for her writing.
The Hans Christian Andersen Award is given out every two years by the International Board on Books for Young People. It is considered the highest award a writer or illustrator of children's books can receive. Cecil Bødker won the writing award in 1966.
In Denmark, she received the annual Danish Critics Prize for Literature (Kritikerprisen) in 1961. She also won the Ministry of Culture's children book prize (Kulturministeriets Børnebogspris) in 1968 for her book Silas og den sorte hoppe. In 1998, she was honored with the Grand Prize of the Danish Academy for all her amazing work as a writer.
Her book Leoparden (1970) was translated into English. This English version won the annual Batchelder Award in 1976. This award is given by the American Library Association to the best children's book that was first published in another language and then translated into English in the United States.
