Marie Cecilia Stegö Chilò (born 25 March 1959 – died 15 February 2025) was a Swedish politician. She was the Minister for Culture for a short time in 2006. This job involves looking after things like art, music, media, and sports in Sweden. Before becoming a minister, she was a leader at groups that supported business and free markets. She also worked as a journalist and was a member of the Moderate Party.

Early Life and Education

Cecilia Stegö Chilò was born in Linköping, a city in Östergötland County, Sweden. She was interested in learning about how countries are run and how money works. She studied subjects like political science (how governments work), economics (how money and trade work), law, and different languages. She lived with her husband and two children in Bromma, which is in western Stockholm.

Career Before Politics

Cecilia Stegö Chilò had many different jobs before she became a government minister. In 1982, she was a leader for a student group called the European Democrat Students. She also worked as a reporter for a newspaper called Norrköpings Tidningar.

Later, she worked for the Moderate Party. She was a press secretary, helping the party talk to the media. She also wrote speeches for the party's leaders. From 1989 to 1999, she was a journalist for another newspaper, Svenska Dagbladet. She also shared her political thoughts as a commentator on Sveriges Radio from 2001 to 2002.

Time as a Politician

Cecilia Stegö Chilò was a member of the Moderate Party. In 1995, she left the party for a while. This was because she disagreed with how the party treated another member who was against some parts of the EU. She rejoined the Moderate Party in 2005.

In 2006, the Moderate Party and other parties formed a new government in Sweden. On 6 October 2006, the new Prime Minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, chose Cecilia Stegö Chilò to be the Minister for Culture. This meant she was in charge of culture, media, and sports for the whole country.

Resignation from Office

After only ten days as Minister for Culture, Cecilia Stegö Chilò decided to resign. She left her position on 16 October 2006. Another minister, Lars Leijonborg, took over her duties for a short time. Then, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth was chosen as the new Minister for Culture on 24 October 2006.

Even though she might have been able to receive her salary for some time after leaving, she chose not to take any money.
