Cecilio Lastra's Boxing Career
Starting as a Professional Boxer
Cecilio Lastra began his professional boxing journey when he was 24 years old. His first fight was in December 1975. He won this six-round match against Juan Barros by points. Most of his early fights took place in his hometown of Santander.
Lastra had a great start to his career. He won his first twelve fights in a row. Six of these wins were by knockout in the very first round! His first loss came in September 1976 against Carlos Hernandez.
Winning the Spanish Title
After his first defeat, Lastra won eight more fights in Santander. Then, he fought Isidoro Cabeza for the Spanish featherweight title. Lastra won this fight and became the Spanish champion.
However, he lost his first title defense in August 1977. He was knocked out in the eleventh round by Roberto Castanon. This was his first knockout loss.
Becoming a World Champion
In December 1977, Cecilio Lastra had a huge fight. He challenged Rafael Ortega for the WBA featherweight title. The fight took place in Santander, and about 6,300 fans came to watch.
Ortega was from Panama and had won the title earlier that year. Lastra knocked Ortega down in the second round with a left jab to the nose. Ortega got up at the count of eight. He managed to finish all fifteen rounds of the fight.
At the end of the match, the judges' scores were read. Cecilio Lastra won by a split decision. This meant he became the new WBA world featherweight champion!
Defending the World Title
For his first world title defense, Lastra traveled to Panama City. He fought Eusebio Pedroza in April 1978. Pedroza was 22 years old and a strong challenger.
Pedroza knocked Lastra down three times during the fight. In the thirteenth round, Pedroza won by technical knockout. This meant Cecilio Lastra lost his world title.
Later Career Fights
After losing his world title, Lastra never fought for a world title again. He did challenge Roberto Castanon for the EBU title two more times. He lost their second fight by points. Their third fight ended with Castanon winning by technical knockout in the fourth round. This meant Lastra lost all three of his fights against Castanon.
Cecilio Lastra lost his last four fights in a row. Two of these were Spanish title fights. His final professional fight was in July 1982. He lost in the fifth round against Amalio Galan.
