The Cedar of Lebanon is a very special type of tree. It's a large evergreen tree, meaning it stays green all year round. It belongs to the cedrus family. You can find these amazing trees growing naturally in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, from Lebanon all the way to Turkey.
What Does It Look Like?
These trees can grow super tall, up to 40 meters (about 130 feet)! They can also spread out wide, up to 10 meters (about 33 feet). Their main trunk can be as wide as 2.5 meters (over 8 feet) across! The bark is thick, scaly, and usually black or grey-brown.
When a Cedar of Lebanon tree is young, it looks like a cone. But as it gets older, its top becomes flatter and its branches spread out more. The leaves are like needles, pointed and about 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) long. They can be a cool bluish-green or a dark green color.
The female cones start out dull green. As they grow, they turn brown and become barrel-shaped. They are usually 6 to 10 centimeters (2.4 to 4 inches) long.
Why Is It Important?
The Cedar of Lebanon is a beautiful tree. People often plant it in large parks and big gardens because it looks so grand. It adds a lot of beauty to any landscape.
