The Immaculate Conception Cathedral (also known as the Catedral de la Purísima Concepción in Spanish) is a very important Catholic building in the city of Celaya, Mexico. It's the main church for the local Catholic community. Many people sometimes confuse it with the nearby Temple of St. Francis because that temple is much bigger. However, the Cathedral is actually a separate building right next to it.

History of the Cathedral
The Cathedral of Celaya is not the same as the Temple of St. Francis. The Temple of St. Francis was built by the Franciscans, who were missionaries in the area. They first built a smaller chapel and a convent next to it.
Building the Temple of St. Francis
The first stone for the Temple of St. Francis was laid on February 2, 1683. Building this temple took a long time. By 1715, the arched ceilings, called vaults, were finished. The tower was finally completed in 1725.
Renovations and Changes
The Cathedral building has been updated several times over the years. It was remodeled at the beginning of the 1800s and again in the early 1900s.
Sadly, the Cathedral also suffered a fire at one point. After the fire, it was remodeled one last time. During this renovation, a beautiful German organ was added. This organ was placed in the choir area, which is where the singers sit.
