Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War was a very special time. It celebrated the Soviet Union's victory in a huge war that lasted from 1941 to 1945. For many families in Russia, Victory Day on May 9th is the most important holiday. Everyone proudly remembers the brave actions of their family members during this war.

Getting Ready for the Big Day

Every year, people get ready for the Victory Parade. But 2020 was extra special! The President of Russia announced it would be the "Year of Memory and Glory." This meant it was a time to remember the heroes and their bravery.

Many countries that were once part of the Soviet Union also planned big events. The main celebrations were supposed to be a military parade, a march called the "Immortal Regiment," and fireworks. All of this was planned for Victory Day on May 9, 2020.

However, things changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The main military parade in Russia was moved to June 24. The "Immortal Regiment" march, where people carry pictures of their family members who fought in the war, was planned for July 26, 2020. But because of the health situation, it was postponed again.

The Air Parade

Even though the main parade was moved, the air part of the parade still happened on May 9! It was amazing to watch. Helicopters and military planes flew over.

The show started with a giant Mi-26 transport helicopter. Four Mi-8 helicopters flew alongside it. Then came nine Su-30SM and MiG-29 planes from famous aerobatic teams. These teams, called "Russian Knights" and "Swifts," do incredible tricks in the sky. Six Su-25 "Grach" attack aircraft also flew by. They painted the sky over Moscow with smoke in the colors of the Russian flag: white, blue, and red!

Remembering Heroes at Rzhev

On May 9, 2020, a very important new monument was supposed to open. It's called the Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier. This is the biggest monument built in modern Russia.

The memorial honors all the soldiers of the Red Army. It was built because veterans of the Great Patriotic War wanted to remember the brave soldiers. It stands in a place near Rzhev where very tough battles happened in 1942 and 1943. It helps everyone remember the sacrifices made during the war.
