Clelia Grillo Borromeo Arese (born in 1684 – died August 23, 1777) was a brilliant Italian scientist and mathematician. She was known for her amazing skills in solving tough math problems. Clelia was also a natural philosopher, which means she studied how the world works, like a scientist.
Life and Education
Clelia was born in Genoa, Italy. Her father was Duke Marcantonio of Mondragone. Her mother was Maria Antonia, a marquise.
Clelia received a great education. She learned several languages, mathematics, and natural science. She could speak eight languages! She was very interested in geometry and how things work. She first learned from her mother. Then she went to a convent. It is not fully known where she learned the advanced subjects she became famous for.
In 1707, Clelia married Count Giovanni Borromeo Arese Benedict. They had eight children together.
Clelia passed away in Milan.
Her Contributions
Clelia was famous for being able to solve any math problem given to her. People described her as a very independent person. This was seen as unusual for women at the time. She loved to host many scientists, both from Italy and other countries. One of her famous guests was Antonio Vallisneri.
Clelia started her own academy in her home in Milan. It was called the nell'Academia Vigilantium Clelia. This academy was active from 1719 to 1726. During a war in 1746, Clelia supported Spain against Austria. Because of this, she had to leave Milan for a while. When she was allowed to come back, people celebrated her like a hero!
In 1728, Clelia made an important discovery. She found a special kind of curve called the clélie curve. Imagine a point moving on a sphere (like a globe). If it moves in a certain way, it traces out this unique curve.
Recognition
The city of Genoa honored Clelia for her achievements. They gave her a special medal. The medal had the words Genuensium Gloria on it. This means "The Honor of Genoa."
