Gale is a part of Cengage that focuses on libraries. Gale creates online research tools and educational books. They make databases for libraries, schools, and businesses. These databases are available online, in print, as e-books, and in microform.

Cengage Unlimited: A New Way to Learn

On December 5, 2017, Cengage announced a new service called Cengage Unlimited. This is a subscription service for college students. Instead of buying many textbooks, students can pay one fee. This fee gives them access to all of Cengage's digital learning materials.

The service became available in the summer of 2018. It was very popular with students. The University of Missouri was the first university to offer this plan. All their students could use it starting in January 2019.

How Cengage Group Started and Grew

The company's journey in publishing began in 1979. At that time, a company called International Thomson Publishing bought Wadsworth Publishing. Over the years, they bought many other publishing companies. These included Van Nostrand Reinhold, Delmar, and Gale Research.

In 2000, the company changed its name to Thomson Learning. They continued to grow by adding more educational publishers. In 2006, Thomson Learning was put up for sale. A group of investors bought the company for a large sum of money. On July 24, 2007, its name officially changed to Cengage Learning.

Cengage Learning continued to expand. In 2011, they bought the school publishing part of the National Geographic Society. They combined this with their English language teaching business. This created the new brand called National Geographic Learning.

In 2013, Cengage Learning faced some financial challenges. The company had taken on a lot of debt. Also, fewer people were buying traditional paper textbooks. To reorganize its business, Cengage Learning went through a process called Chapter 11. They came out of this process on April 1, 2014. This helped them reduce their debt. After this, the company decided to focus more on digital study guides. They also moved their main office to Boston.

In November 2016, Cengage Learning shortened its name to just Cengage. In 2019, Cengage planned to merge with another big publisher, McGraw-Hill Education. This merger would have created one of the largest educational publishers. However, the merger was called off on May 1, 2020. In August 2021, the company changed its name again to Cengage Group.
