The Centenary Medal was a special award created by the Australian Government in 2001. It was made to celebrate 100 years since Australia became a nation, known as the Federation of Australia. The medal honored people who had done great things for Australian society or its government. It was also given to "centenarians" – Australians born before 1902 who were alive on January 1, 2001. This was the day Australia celebrated its 100th birthday as a federation. A group of experts, led by historian Geoffrey Blainey, decided who would receive the medal.

What the Centenary Medal Looks Like

The Medal's Design

The front of the medal shows a seven-pointed star. This star is called the Commonwealth Star. The six points stand for Australia's six states. The seventh point represents Australia's territories. In the middle of the star, there is a design that shows Aboriginal traditions. Around the edge of the medal, there are 100 small dots. These dots represent the 100 years of Australia's federation.

The back of the medal also has a seven-pointed star. Around the edge, it says: "For Contribution Made to Australian Society."

The Ribbon's Colors and Meaning

The ribbon of the Centenary Medal has special colors. Crimson, a deep red, represents the federation itself. Blue and gold colors show the start of the 21st century. There are seven gold and red lines on the ribbon. These lines stand for the paths the states took to become part of the federation. The medal's bar and ribbon look the same. This helps everyone know that someone wearing it received this important award.
