Centerville began as a busy mining community. People came here to dig for valuable minerals. It got its name because it was in the middle of the Boise Basin. This area was rich with mining activity.
A post office opened in 1864. Back then, its name was spelled "Centreville." The spelling changed to "Centerville" in 1893. The post office eventually closed in 1952. An older, fun name for Centerville was "Hogum."
In 1909, Centerville was a small town. Its population was 217 people.
