Centre A (Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art) is a special art gallery in Vancouver, Canada. It's a non-profit place, which means it doesn't try to make money. Instead, its main goal is to share and explore modern art from Asia and by artists of Asian heritage.

This gallery is the only one in Canada that focuses only on contemporary Asian art. It was started in 1999 by Hank Bull, Zheng Shengtian, and Stephanie Holmquist. Important community leaders like Milton Wong have helped guide Centre A over the years. Many talented curators and directors have also helped the gallery grow and succeed. Centre A is a registered charity, which means it gets support from donations to keep its programs going.

Centre A has moved a few times since it opened. It first started on Homer Street. Later, it moved to 2 West Hastings Street in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. In 2013, the gallery found a new home in Vancouver's Chinatown, on East Georgia Street. Finally, in 2017-2018, Centre A moved to its current, larger space at the Sun Wah Centre on Keefer Street. This new location is about 3,300 square feet, giving it plenty of room for art.

Over the years, Centre A has shown amazing art by famous artists from Canada and around the world. Some of these artists include Yoko Ono, Abbas Akhavan, Ali Kazimi, and Samson Young.

What is the Reading Room and Library?

Centre A has a special Reading Room and Library. It started in 1999 with books and materials given by artists, researchers, and curators. This collection helps people learn more about modern Asian art. It also explores the artistic connections between North America and Asia.

The Reading Room also holds the Fraser Finlayson Collection. This is a collection of rare books about classic Chinese and Japanese art. Some of these books are very old, dating back to the late 1800s! It's a great place to discover art history.
