Centre A is a special art gallery in Vancouver, Canada. It is also known as the Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. This gallery is a non-profit organization, which means it focuses on art and education, not on making money.
Centre A is the only public art gallery in Canada that focuses on modern art from Asia and by artists of Asian heritage living around the world. It is a place where people can see, learn about, and enjoy amazing contemporary Asian art.

History of Centre A
Centre A was started on February 23, 1999. It was founded by Hank Bull, Zheng Shengtian, and Stephanie Holmquist. Many important people from the community, like Milton Wong, helped lead the gallery.
Over the years, many talented curators and directors have helped Centre A grow. Some of these leaders include Sadira Rodrigues, Alice Ming Wai Jim, Makiko Hara, Haema Sivanesan, Tyler Russell, and Henry Heng Lu.
Where Centre A Has Been
Centre A has moved to a few different locations in Vancouver.
- It first opened at 849 Homer Street. This was close to the main Vancouver Public Library.
- Later, it moved to 2 West Hastings Street in the Downtown Eastside area of Vancouver. Makiko Hara was the curator during this time.
- In 2013, Centre A moved to Chinatown, at 229 East Georgia Street. Haema Sivanesan was the director then.
- Between 2017 and 2018, Centre A moved to its current home. It is now located at the Sun Wah Centre, at 268 Keefer Street. This space is quite large, about 3,300 square feet.

Reading Room and Library
Centre A has a special Reading Room and Library. It started in 1999 with books and materials given by artists, researchers, and curators. These contributions came from Vancouver and from around the world.
The library has many publications about modern Asian art and art by people of Asian heritage. It also explores the connections between art in North America and Asia. The Reading Room also holds the Fraser Finlayson Collection. This collection has rare books about old Chinese and Japanese art, with some books dating back to the late 1800s.
