The Centre Georges-Vézina is a sports building in Saguenay, Quebec, Canada. It used to be called the Colisée de Chicoutimi. This arena can hold 4,724 people, with 3,683 seats.
It was built in 1949 and has a very large ice rink. This rink is 200 feet long and 100 feet wide. This size is known as an Olympic-sized ice pad.
The arena is named after Georges Vézina, a famous hockey goalie. He played for the Montreal Canadiens and was from Chicoutimi.
Home of the Saguenéens
The Centre Georges-Vézina is the home arena for the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. This ice hockey team has played there since 1973. They are part of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.
Plans for the Arena
In 2018, the mayor at the time, Josée Néron, suggested building a new arena. This new arena would have been in downtown Chicoutimi. However, the government of Quebec did not give money for the project. So, the plan for a new arena did not happen.
Now, the current mayor, Julie Dufour, has a different idea. She wants to update and improve the Centre Georges-Vézina. Her plans include changing the ice rink to a standard size. This new size would be 200 feet long and 85 feet wide. This is the size used in the National Hockey League (NHL). The renovation would also update the locker rooms, press box, and offices.
