Discover the Centre of the Earth
This unique centre helps young people and adults learn about nature. It shows how we can live in a way that helps our planet. It's a great spot to explore and understand the natural world around us.
Where is the Centre Located?
The Centre of the Earth is very close to Birmingham City Centre, about 1.5 kilometers away. It first opened its doors in 1993. People say it was the very first centre of its kind built in a city in Europe. The centre sits on beautiful, green grounds that were once a council yard. These grounds are perfect for learning and playing outdoors.
Right next to the centre is the Soho Loop of the BCN Main Line Canal. The centre even has its own special dock, called a wharf, which has been fixed up recently. This makes it easy to explore the canal too!
What is the Building Like?
The main building at the Centre of the Earth is quite special. It's made with a timber frame, which means it uses wood in a smart way. This shows how we can build things using natural materials that are good for the environment.
The architect who designed the building was David Lea. Keith Hall, who helped start the Association for Environment Conscious Building, was the builder. The building and its grounds are easy for everyone to use, including people who use wheelchairs or have trouble moving around.
