The Centrella Inn is a group of historic buildings located at 612 Central Avenue in Pacific Grove, California. This special place is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Being on this list means it's recognized as an important part of American history and culture.

A Look at the Centrella Inn

The Centrella Inn is not just one building, but a complex of four historic structures. These buildings are found in the beautiful coastal town of Pacific Grove. It's a great example of old-fashioned architecture from the late 1800s.

What Makes It Special?

The first two buildings of the Centrella Inn were built a long time ago, between 1888 and 1889. These buildings are quite old, making them a valuable link to the past. The entire complex includes four buildings that are considered "contributing" to its historic status. This means they help tell the story of the place.

Three of these buildings are one-story tall, while one is two and a half stories high. Together, they show what architecture was like in Pacific Grove over a century ago.

Why Was It Built?

The Centrella Inn was built to welcome visitors to Pacific Grove. At that time, the town was growing quickly. Many people came for the Methodist Chautauqua, which was a popular educational and religious gathering.

The inn also became important after the Southern Pacific Railroad connected to the city. This made it much easier for people to travel to Pacific Grove. Plus, a big fire in 1887 at the famous Del Monte Hotel nearby meant more visitors needed places to stay. The Centrella Inn helped meet this need.

Becoming a Historic Place

Because of its age and its role in the growth of Pacific Grove, the Centrella Inn was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This recognition helps protect the buildings and reminds us of their importance in history.
